Applied Kinesiology

Applied Kinesiology (AK) is an interdisciplinary procedure which subjects patients to various influences (food, vitamins, herbs, homeopathic remedies, music, etc) to test muscle strength (resistance-response) on the extended arm or leg. Based on the responses of these tests (weak responses are interpreted as “bad” and strong responses as “good”), the practitioner can make a diagnosis, provide prescriptions, food recommendations, or other health-related choices. A patient's health history is required, along with examination and laboratory findings, to determine the treatment required.

AK was originally developed in the 1960s by George Goodheart, a Detroit chiropractor. He concluded that internal triggers, such as injury, nerve entrapment, misalignment of the skeleton, and brain damage, could cause adverse changes in muscle function. AK proponents theorize that muscle weakness can also be caused by diseased or dysfunctional internal organs, exposure to toxic substances, nutritional deficiencies, food sensitivities, or emotional issues.

NOTE: Applied Kinesiology is not part of the science of kinesiology – the study of the principles of mechanics and anatomy in relation to human movement.

Also known as Contact Reflex Analysis, Dental Kinesiology, or Behavioral Kinesiology.
